Assel, welcome! To start, could you tell us about your career journey before joining the AIFC? Where did you study, and how did your career progress?
ASSEL
Of course. I began my academic journey at Gumilev Eurasian National University, where I majored in International Relations. Later, I pursued further studies in the UK through the Bolashak Programme, focusing on politics and peace sciences. Upon returning to Kazakhstan, I worked in the civil service for five years.

My first role was at the Ministry of Economy, where I worked on several key projects. One of the most memorable was leading Kazakhstan’s bid to host Expo 2017. It was an incredible experience - preparing a 2,000-page application, coordinating with various government bodies, and engaging with international organisations.
You were there from the very beginning of the Expo 2017 journey! That must have been intense.
Absolutely. It was a steep learning curve, but it taught me so much about negotiation and project management. In 2014, after successfully bringing the Expo to Kazakhstan and establishing "Astana Expo" national company, I transitioned to the National Bank in Almaty for two years. Then, when the AIFC was established, I joined as one of its founding team members.
That’s an impressive trajectory! With such high-pressure projects, do you have any memorable or amusing moments to share?
One coincidence comes to mind rather than a funny story. While promoting renewable energy as Expo’s theme, I didn’t realise it would later align with my work in green finance. Now, much of my work revolves around financing renewable energy projects. It feels like fate led me here!
It certainly seems so. Could you tell us more about your role in green finance and your current focus at the AIFC?
When I joined the AIFC, I helped establish the Green Finance Centre. At the time, the concept of green finance was new to Kazakhstan, so we worked hard to educate stakeholders. Some even joked that green finance meant dealing with dollars, as they are green in colour!

We’ve since launched green finance markets not only in Kazakhstan but also in Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan. Recently, I’ve shifted my focus to our Carbon Platform Department. This initiative marks a groundbreaking step for Kazakhstan, introducing the development and trading of environmental instruments like renewable energy certificates and carbon credits on the stock exchange.
That’s groundbreaking work! It must feel rewarding to contribute to such impactful global solutions.
Absolutely. Our work extends beyond borders and aims to address global challenges like climate change. It’s about more than profits - it’s about preserving our planet. This sense of mission keeps me motivated.
On a lighter note, how do you unwind after such demanding work? Any hobbies?
I enjoy sports, especially tennis, which I recently picked up. It’s both a physical and mental workout. I also love participating in quizzes, particularly English ones. We even had an AIFC quiz team at one point!
That’s a great mix of activity and intellect. Lastly, could you share your thoughts on the corporate culture at the AIFC?
The atmosphere here is fantastic. Our team is young, professional, and collaborative. Everyone is passionate about their work, which makes communication effortless and enjoyable.
Assel, before we wrap up, is there any message you’d like to share with our readers?
My advice would be to always believe in what you do and stay true to fundamental values like fairness and honesty. These principles will guide you to success.
Wise words to live by. Assel, thank you for sharing your journey and insights. We wish you continued success in your career and beyond!
Thank you very much. It’s been a pleasure.
