Hello Sairan! Thank you for taking the time to join us for the Spotlight interview series. To start, could you tell us about your life before joining AIFC? Where did you go to school, and how did your career unfold?
SAIRAN
Of course. I’m originally from Karaganda. In 2009, I began my studies at the Karaganda Academy of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, where I earned my bachelor’s degree in 2013. After graduating, I joined the internal affairs bodies, specifically in the criminal police, commonly known as criminal investigation. I spent about five years there and eventually became the deputy head of the criminal police department in the Abay district of Karaganda region.
That sounds like a very challenging and intense career.
It was. I worked on a variety of cases - crimes against persons and property. However, I prefer not to share specific details because these cases represent people’s lives, and I feel it’s important to respect their privacy.
That’s very thoughtful of you. So, how did you transition from law enforcement to studying abroad?
While I was working, I decided to aim for a new goal: studying abroad. I applied for the Bolashak program and started preparing for the IELTS exam. It was a tough journey - I took a month off, enrolled in courses, and studied intensively. My teacher doubted I could reach my target score in just four weeks, but I was determined. I took the test on the 27th day of my leave and, two weeks later, received the certificate showing I’d passed.
That’s amazing! Where did the Bolashak program take you?
I pursued a master’s degree at University College London (UCL). After graduating, I returned to Kazakhstan and worked in the Ministry of Justice, specifically in the arbitration department, defending the state’s property rights in international disputes.
And eventually, you joined AIFC. Can you tell us more about your role here?
Certainly. I work in the Regulation and Compliance Department. Our team ensures companies comply with the requirements of the AIFC exchange when listing their securities. We handle verification processes and ongoing monitoring to ensure companies disclose all necessary information as per the exchange rules.
That sounds like fascinating and impactful work. How do you find the corporate culture at AIFC?
It’s one of the best aspects of working here. The open-door policy allows us to approach management with any concerns or ideas. Our team at the AIFC exchange is highly professional and motivated, creating a dynamic environment where we constantly learn from one another. Leaders like Evgenia Bogdanova and Arai Seitova have vast experience, and working under them is incredibly inspiring.
It’s wonderful to hear about such a positive atmosphere. Outside of work, how do you relax?
I enjoy staying active. I used to train in combat sambo and still go to the gym regularly. I’m also deeply connected to my faith, which plays a big role in my life. Studying religious texts is another way I unwind and find balance.
That’s fantastic. Could you tell us a bit about your family?
My parents are my heroes. My father, now retired, worked as a miner his entire life - a demanding and grueling job - while my mother devoted herself to raising us. I’m married now and have a son named Amir, who is almost two years old. My brother has three children, and we’re a close-knit family.
It sounds like you’re surrounded by love and support. Lastly, what principles or motivational messages have guided you throughout your life?
My parents taught me the value of hard work and discipline. My father’s dedication as a miner instilled in me a strong sense of responsibility. I also believe in trusting God and always striving forward with faith and determination.
That’s a powerful message. Sairan, thank you for sharing your story. It’s been a pleasure getting to know you, and I’m sure our colleagues will find your journey inspiring.
Thank you very much for having me. It’s been an honor to share my experiences.
