Aidar, welcome! Let's start by going back to your early career. Could you tell us about your path before joining AIFC?
Aidar
Thank you! Well, it’s been quite a journey. I graduated from Cairo State University in Egypt with both a Bachelor’s and Master’s in economics, political science, and business administration. Studying in Egypt sparked my interest in Islamic finance because it was such a prominent aspect of the economy there. From that point on, I realized Islamic finance had a lot of potential, and I decided to focus my career in that direction.
And how did you bring that focus to Kazakhstan?
After graduating, I worked in various roles across Kazakhstan - in banking, private companies, and consulting firms. I built up experience in Islamic finance and eventually joined the National Bank, working on the development of our financial centre and Islamic finance initiatives. So, when AIFC was established, it was a natural transition to join and support their Islamic finance programs.
What was your role in establishing Islamic finance at AIFC?
I was involved from the start, actually. We worked on setting up a regulatory framework and writing the necessary legislative acts to make Kazakhstan an attractive destination for Islamic financial institutions. Over the past few years, my role has evolved to focus on attracting foreign financial institutions to AIFC. Now, we have one of the most favorable conditions for Islamic banks and financial firms to operate here.
So, as a Senior Manager of the Business Relations Department, what does your team focus on?
Our main objective is to bring new players onto the AIFC platform, both from Kazakhstan and abroad. We’re constantly observing companies in international markets, especially those that want to expand. Mid-sized institutions are particularly appealing because they tend to be the most active in exploring new markets. They’re motivated, ready to grow, and committed to building long-term relationships.
How do you connect with these institutions?
Through a mix of outreach approaches. We do direct communication - yes, even cold calls - and attend international finance events to connect with potential partners. For example, we recently hosted Astana Finance Days, which attracted many stakeholders. These events allow us to introduce companies to AIFC, our opportunities, and the community here. Seeing successful companies already thriving at AIFC is a strong motivation for new players.
It sounds like a very collaborative environment at AIFC. Can you tell us more about the teamwork involved?
Absolutely. Teamwork is everything. No one person can accomplish these big goals alone - it really takes a coordinated effort. I often compare it to a game of chess; every piece, from pawn to king, is essential. If even one part is missing, it’s challenging to achieve success. In our department, we have that understanding, and it’s what makes our teamwork so effective.
Switching gears a bit, let’s talk about life outside work. Do you have any hobbies?
Yes, I do! I’m a big fan of chess - that’s probably obvious! I also enjoy swimming, fishing, and playing football. And I have six children - three sons and three daughters - so my family time is important to me. With my boys, we play sports together, and with my daughters, it’s often more relaxed, like board games or just spending time at home.
Wow, six children! That’s impressive. How do you balance such a busy career with family life?
It’s a balance, for sure. I try to be present with my family when I’m not working, and I’m grateful for any time we get to spend together. It’s not about being perfect, but doing my best to make time for them.
That’s wonderful. Do you have any core values you try to pass on to your children or your team?
Definitely. Faith has always been my anchor. And I don’t just mean spiritual faith - it’s about having faith in your work, your company, your mission. I believe that if you’re invested in your purpose, challenges are much easier to handle. And it’s essential to have faith in yourself. If you don’t believe in what you’re doing, it’s hard to stay motivated. I encourage everyone to find something they believe in deeply.
Powerful advice. Any final words for your colleagues at AIFC?
I’d say, find meaning in what you do and trust in your journey. It’s essential to work in a place where you feel aligned with the mission. When you believe in yourself and your work, everything else falls into place. And that’s where you can make the biggest impact.
Thank you so much, Aidar, for sharing your story with us. Your dedication and perspective are truly inspiring.
Thank you - it was a pleasure.
